How to Choose and Care for Home Lighting

Good lighting begins with the purpose of each room.

In the living room, start with comfortable general lighting. A low-profile ceiling fan with lights works well in rooms with lower ceilings, while a circle chandelier or sculptural flower flush-mount light creates a stronger visual focus. Add a dimmable floor lamp, floor globe lamp, or tripod floor light for reading and relaxing.

The dining room needs more focused illumination. A cone pendant light, paper lantern, or circular chandelier can define the dining area without making it feel crowded. For warm, natural texture, hay paper lanterns are especially effective.

Wall and accent lighting complete the design. A globe sconce produces a soft glow, while a linear wall sconce or adjustable wall light is better for artwork, reading corners, and workspaces. Dome lamps, column floor lamps, and feather-inspired fixtures can also add personality.

How to Clean a Chandelier

Always switch off the power and let the bulbs cool first. Remove surface dust with a microfiber cloth.

To clean a crystal chandelier, wipe each crystal gently with a slightly damp cloth, then dry it immediately. Never spray cleaner directly onto the fixture. Paper lights should only be cleaned with a dry, soft brush because moisture may damage their shape and texture.

By combining practical ceiling lighting with decorative floor and wall lamps—and cleaning each material correctly—you can keep every room comfortable, balanced, and inviting.
